Background of the Study
Political rhetoric in Nigeria is a powerful tool for persuasion, often characterized by complex morphosyntactic structures that blend indigenous language features with formal oratory conventions. This study examines the morphosyntactic features of political speeches by analyzing transcripts from various political debates and campaign events. Nigerian politicians use intricate sentence structures, varied clause constructions, and code-switching to convey their messages, making morphosyntax a critical component of their persuasive strategy (Ibrahim, 2023). By comparing speech transcripts from different political contexts, the research aims to identify patterns of morphosyntactic variation that reflect regional differences, ideological stances, and audience targeting strategies. The study also investigates how these structures influence the clarity, credibility, and emotional appeal of political rhetoric. Such an analysis provides insights into the evolving nature of political language in Nigeria and its impact on voter perception and engagement (Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of morphosyntactic features in political communication, there is limited comparative research on these structures in Nigerian political rhetoric. Variations in sentence construction and word formation may lead to ambiguity or reduced persuasiveness in political speeches (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of a standardized framework for analyzing these linguistic features hinders our ability to assess their effectiveness in political discourse (Okafor, 2024). This study seeks to address this gap by examining morphosyntactic patterns across political speech transcripts, thereby shedding light on how language influences political outcomes (Adebayo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian political speeches.

  • To compare these features across different political contexts.

  • To evaluate their impact on the persuasiveness of political rhetoric.

Research Questions

  • What morphosyntactic patterns are common in Nigerian political speeches?

  • How do these patterns vary across political events?

  • What effect do they have on voter perception?

Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the morphosyntactic dimensions of Nigerian political rhetoric, offering guidance for political communicators and linguists. Its findings will inform strategies to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of political discourse (Ibrahim, 2023; Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of political speech transcripts in Nigeria and does not cover other forms of political communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interplay between morphology and syntax in language.

  • Political Rhetoric: Persuasive language used in political contexts.

  • Speech Transcripts: Written records of spoken political addresses.
